MKK’s Education and Mentorship Program
Teen pregnancy rates in the past 5 years and the effect of Covid-19 in the recent past made MKK realize the need for engaging Early Childhood Development (ECD) center’s as an action to support the rising need supporting young children to have a center that can take care of their needs. After interacting and collecting data on the level of teen pregnancy in Korogocho ward we were hit with the reality of high teen pregnancies encountered since 2017 to date, the data revealed a high number of 415 teen pregnant girls and teen mothers. It is on this premise we were able to establish a center to serve as crèche to the vulnerable community that is faced with myriad challenges.
MKK resorted to scouting in various schools to see what would be done to make a significant difference in transforming the lives of young children.
Among the schools and community spaces, we came across a school within the expansive Korogocho informal settlement that caught our attention. The head teacher after seeing that ECD center learners were running short of space, secured a space that could host 150 ECD learners.
We visited the site for more ideas and understanding. We decided to partner with the school in construction of a classroom and 3 toilets to help the young learners have their unique habitable place.
MKK also factored in the nutrition elements of the children, where we planned to feed the learners on a progressive term and this not only builds in boosting the child’s immune but the overall health and well-being of the child.
